El último reino (Temporada 2) / The last kingdom (Season 2)

I’ve just watched the second season of this series, based in the Saxon stories novel series from Richard Cornwell.
This season is divided in two parts, separated by a time lapse of three years and each one with its own rhythm. Along the series we can see the evolution of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who having finished the first season as an independent warrior climbs in the social ladder after going into the serving of Alfred The Great, becoming one of the powers of the kingdom. This evolution is similar to the rest of characters, main and secondary.
I’m happy to check that the series has kept the staging level, and also that it points towards a spectacular third series.
That I’m already waiting for, of course.

La batalla que conmocionó Europa / The battle that shook Europe

Recently I read a comment on this book in my player’s group. It itched my curiosity and decided to have a look at it.
The result is an interesting book about the Swedish point of view of the events that lead to the battle of Poltava (1709) and a detailed account of its progress. The book is based in the Swedish perception of the battle, based in reports from the Swedish chancery and numerous personal histories of the participants. These histories also provide an in-depth image of the members of the swedish army, from the King Charles XII down to humble servants, providing a radiography of the contemporary Swedish society.
I miss, however, a vision from the Russian side of the history because, with the exception of some remarks on the military organization, the Tsar or some particular behavior, we are in the dark in front of the ample description of the swedish counterparts.
Anyway I consider it a really interesting book to introduce ourselves in the Great Northern War and that forgotten power called Sweden.
The author, Peter Mikael Englund, is a writer, historian and member of the Swedish Academy, with a broad career as an investigator of the Sweden history in the XVII and XVIII centuries.
